EPL Legends – Sultan of Selangor Cup6 Dec 2011
On a hot & humid Saturday night in the capital, Selangor took to the field looking to beat Singapore in front of a jubilant home crowd at the Sultan of Selangor Cup. We knew we were in for a special night as Football Focus supported by Selangor had arranged to help the hosts install a couple of eye-catching wild cards in the starting line-up. In fact, these wild cards just happened to be EPL legends from two of the biggest clubs in the world. One famous for helping Manchester United’s treble cause in 1999 and the other a stalwart of the Liverpool side of the mid-nineties.
Jesper Blomqvist and Jason McAteer, so often adversaries in the premiership in their prime when they turned out for their clubs were in town to give fans the unique opportunity to see them take to the field once more and this time it was to be in local colours, no less.
Having reacquainted themselves with the nitty-gritty of the beautiful game it was soon time for the lads to actually meet the fans, where supporters were given the chance to not only meet their heroes but also compete against them in a spot-kick simulator competition. Old shirts were dusted off, many autographs were signed, and two tired footballing legends departed leaving a sea of smiling, satisfied fans behind them.
